Apply for this role What you'll do Design and run experiments on model behavior and reliability Read papers, reproduce results, write internal research notes Build evaluation datasets and benchmarks for our domains Contribute findings to product and Robotics Lab teams Maintain reproducible experiment infrastructure Present results to engineering and product audiences Required skills Strong Python and ML fundamentals (transformers, training loops) Statistical literacy — you know what a significant result is Clear technical writing Bonus: published work, Kaggle, open-source ML contributions Preferred / bonus Hands-on fine-tuning or LoRA experience Familiarity with PyTorch and HuggingFace ecosystems Has reproduced at least one paper end-to-end Interest in safety, alignment or evaluation literature Who should apply Final-year students or graduates with genuine research instinct — people who reproduce papers for fun and distrust unbenchmarked claims. Ideal candidate profile You take experimental hygiene seriously — seeds, splits, baselines You'd rather publish a small honest negative result than a big noisy positive one You can translate research into engineering constraints What you'll learn Applied evaluation methodology for production AI Trade-offs between fine-tuning, prompting and retrieval Working with applied engineers to land research in product Writing for engineers and decision-makers, not reviewers Tools & stack PyTorch HuggingFace Python Weights & Biases pgvector Jupyter Custom eval harnesses Growth path Path toward applied research roles spanning AI products and robotics R&D — rare exposure for an early-career researcher. Months 0–3 Reproduce, benchmark and document. Own one evaluation surface. Months 3–6 Run an independent experiment whose results inform a product decision. Year 1 (Applied Researcher) Bridge research and product on a Vestval AI workstream. Years 2+ Specialise — evaluation, reliability, retrieval, perception (Robotics Lab) — with publication freedom.
